Coconut Oil (CO) is one very essential product in my home. It is an amazing product that I use for almost everything from beauty products, eating, cooking and cleaning.
Baking: CO can be substituted 1-for-1 in most baking recipes. When using coconut cooking oil for baking it can be used as a butter, oil, shortening, lard or margarine substitute. However, coconut cooking oil in baking tends to make a slightly drier end product, so the recipe may need to be adjusted slightly.
Cooking: CO for cooking is excellent for frying and sautéing as it has a higher smoke point than many other oils; CO has a 350 degree F smoke point.
Body Moisturizer: When I get out of the shower, I rub CO all over my body— it feels and smells amazing and such a good moisturizer. Every winter I get really dry skin and this year it hasn’t happened. I add a little bit of Moringa Oil and Vitamin E to my jar that sits in my bathroom just for a little skin conditioning.
Facial moisturizer: This was hard for me to do at first as I break out anytime I put something on my face. I read so many blogs of people saying it was great for Acne. My first thought “How can a oil control my acne?” So I gave it a try, I did breakout a bit at first and now I very rarely have breakouts. I’ve been doing this now for two years and my face feels amazing and looks so much healthier. Turns out coconut oil is antimicrobial, antifungal, and antibacterial, which explains why my face hasn’t broken out from it! Tea Tree oil mixed in it helps as well.
Eye makeup remover: I absolutely love removing my eye makeup with CO. It comes off so easily and moisturizes your eyes at the same time. I just rub it on my eyes and rub it off with kleenex or a cotton ball. Works better than anything else I’ve ever tried.
Homemade deodorant: I use it to make my deodorant and also rub just plain CO on my arm pits first and then my deodorant. It helps if your tender to baking soda. My recipe is on my blog. My hubby now uses it and loves it. I highly recommend that you make your own.
Deep conditioner for hair: At least once a week, I rub CO on my scalp and hair. I do this in the evening before bed and sleep with it in and wash it out the next morning (I don’t wash my hair every day). I shampoo it twice through and rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar hair rinse (recipe on blog). My hair is fine and thin. It breaks easily and is also colored. Since using this method my hair is stronger, healthier and actually growing.
Toothpaste: I started making my own toothpaste about 6 months ago with CO and it has made a huge difference in my teeth. The CO gives it a creamy consistency, which is similar to store bought (yet way better for you!). I have sensitive teeth to cold and used Sensodyne forever. The first week or so my teeth were a little sensitive but I pushed on and kept up with it. Now my teeth are much healthier and yaaaa no more chemicals in my mouth and sensitivity isn’t quite a big issue.
Oil Pulling: If you haven’t heard about oil pulling you really should look into it. This is where you use CO as a mouth wash. You put about a tablespoon in your mouth and swish it around for about 5-10 mins and then spit it in the garbabe. It draws out all of the toxins in your mouth. Furniture wood polish: Okay this one I was not to sure about. I ran out of my Murphy’s oil and decided to find a natural cleaner for my wood. To my surprise “IT WORKED AMAZING”. I had some railings that were weathered pretty bad and i thought the only way to fix it was to sand it down and refinish it. So why not give it a try i thought… The railing looks amazing almost like new and the more I do it, the better it looks.
Yeast Infections: Sorry this one is a bit taboo but I had to mention it. All us women and men will have one of these infections in their life time. I wanted a natural cure for it as I don’t like the creams offered (too messy and full of chemicals). CO was my savoir AGAIN… two days it was cleared up. Its great to use for baby’s and children who get a yeast infection as well.
Weight Loss: Coconut oil helps to promote natural weight loss by helping to keep the thyroid gland healthy and functioning well. The thyroid gland controls the body’s metabolism and how many calories the body burns off. The short chain and medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil help to increase thyroid function, which in turn increases the body’s metabolism, which helps to increase energy levels and the amount of calories it burns off. When combined with exercise and a healthy diet, taking coconut oil for weight loss can lead to exceptional results.
