Autumn Diffuser Blends

Wow is summer really over???  We had a very hot dry summer in Calgary AB, Canada this year.  It was probably one of the warmest summers with no rain I’ve ever experienced here… Now I’m not complaining, I’m loving it but sad it is over.

Fall is such a beautiful time of year with the trees all changing color, the cooler weather and the fresh smell in the air.  When I think of Fall I think of all the nice scents that accompany it.  I used to use candles and air fresheners in my home, but then I did some research and found that most candles and air fresheners have toxic ingredients in them that can cause respiratory issues.  Yep it’s true.  Not to mention the artificial fragrances that are linked to cancer-causing chemicals.  Yikes, not for me…

I did a lot of research and found that Essential Oils are way better for you and a lot cheaper in the long run.  I now have a cupboard full of Essential Oils and use them daily, either as air fresheners, face/body lotions, healing etc.

Being it is Autumn as of tomorrow I decided to share some of my favorite Essential Oil Blends for Autumn.  I hope you enjoy and have an awesome Autumn.

Activated Charcoal What it is and the Top 10 uses for it.

Activated Charcoal Uses & Benefits

Activated charcoal is a potent natural treatment used to trap toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so the body doesn’t reabsorb them. It’s made from a variety of sources, but when used for natural healing, it’s important to select activated charcoal made from coconut shells or other natural sources.

One of the most popular activated charcoal uses is for the safe and effective treatment of poisoning and drug overdoses. It’s used in emergency trauma centers across the world. In addition, it’s used to reduce bloating and gas, lower cholesterol, treat bile flow problems safely during pregnancy, and even prevent hangovers.(1)

Research shows that activated charcoal works better than stomach pumping (gastric lavage) in some situations.(2)

So, how does activated charcoal work?

Activated charcoal works by trapping toxins and chemicals in its millions of tiny pores. Typically, however, it’s not used when petroleum, alcohol, lye, acids or other corrosive poisons are ingested.

It doesn’t absorb the toxins, however. Instead it works through the chemical process of adsorption. In the body, absorption is the reaction of elements, including nutrients, chemicals and toxins, soaked up and assimilated into the blood stream. Adsorption is the chemical reaction where elements bind to a surface.

The porous surface of activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins and gas to bond with it. The nooks and crannies in activated charcoal are created through a heating process. It’s important to note that activated charcoal is not charcoal used in your barbecue grill! Barbecue charcoal is loaded with toxins and chemicals, and should never be consumed.

Top 10 Activated Charcoal Uses

Whenever you take activated charcoal, it’s imperative to drink 12-16 glasses of water per day. Activated charcoal can cause dehydration if adequate amounts of water aren’t consumed in tandem. In addition, this helps to flush out the toxins quickly and prevents constipation experienced by some individuals.

In addition to being a safe and effective treatment for poisonings and the removal of toxins from the system, additional activated charcoal uses include deodorizing and disinfecting, and it’s an important step to cure Lyme disease. Here are the top 10 activated charcoal uses:

1. Whitens Teeth

Have your teeth become stained from coffee, tea, wine or berries? Activated charcoal helps whiten teeth while promoting good oral health by changing the pH balance in the mouth, helping prevent cavities, bad breath and gum disease.

It works to whiten teeth by adsorbing plaque and microscopic tidbits that stain teeth. This activated charcoal use is cost-effective and an all-natural solution for a bright smile.

BE CAREFUL, it can (and will) stain grout and fabrics. Protect counters, floors and clothing before using.

To whiten your teeth naturally, wet a toothbrush and dip into powdered activated charcoal. Brush teeth as normal, paying special attention to areas showing the most staining. Sip a bit of water, swish through mouth thoroughly and spit. Rinse well, until spit is clear.

For best results, brush your teeth with activated charcoal two-three times per week.

Note: If you have crowns, caps or porcelain veneers, it’s possible that activated charcoal will stain them. In addition, if your teeth become sensitive, quit using it.

2. Alleviates Gas & Bloating

One activated charcoal use often overlooked is to alleviate uncomfortable gas and bloating. It works by binding the gas-causing byproducts in foods that cause discomfort.

A study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that activated charcoal prevents intestinal gas following a typical gas-producing meal.(4)

Dosing recommendations to alleviate gas and bloating: Take 500 milligrams one hour prior to a typical gas-producing meal, with a full glass of water. Follow with an additional glass of water immediately thereafter to help get the charcoal into your system, where it can bind with gas-producing elements.

3. Treats Alcohol Poisoning & Helps Prevent Hangovers

While activated charcoal does not adsorb alcohol, it does help quickly remove other toxins from the body that contribute to poisoning. Alcohol is rarely consumed in its pure form; mixers that include artificial sweeteners and chemicals are common. Activated charcoal removes these toxins.

In addition, when activated charcoal is taken at the same time as alcohol, some studies show it can significantly reduce blood alcohol concentrations.(5) Princeton University’s First Aider’s Guide to Alcohol indicates that activated charcoal is administered in some situations related to alcohol.(6) This includes if the individual is unconscious or showing signs of acute alcohol poisoning.

4. Mold Cleansing

Most people don’t think about mold living in their bodies, but it can. Toxic mold causes depression, kidney and liver failure, decreased brain function, heart disease, eye irritation, headaches, vomiting, impaired immune system function, and severe respiratory distress.

Homes that have flooded, or even those with small leaks under a sub-floor or in the walls, can create an environment where mold can thrive. Poor ventilation contributes to the problem, and bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms are particularly prone to mold growth.

If there is visible mold in your home, it must be mitigated properly. It’s important to wear gloves and a protective mask to keep from inhaling toxic mold during cleanup. Baking soda, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil and borax can be used to clean mold off hard surfaces and keep mold from growing in the future.

If you or your family experience symptoms including wheezing, rashes, watery eyes, coughing or headaches that aren’t explained in other ways, your home should be evaluated for mold spore levels, even if no visible mold is detected. It can thrive behind drywall, under floors and in ventilation ducts.

5. Water Filtration

Activated charcoal traps impurities in water including solvents, pesticides, industrial waste and other chemicals. This is why it’s used in water filtration systems throughout the world. However, it doesn’t trap viruses, bacteria and hard-water minerals.

According to a study published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, activated carbon filters (activated charcoal), removes some fluoride. (7) Avoiding fluoride and detoxing from it is important for oral health, proper immune system functioning, and healthy kidneys and liver.

Drinking water is essential to good health; however, typical tap water is toxic and laden with chemicals, toxins and fluoride. Ingestion should be limited whenever possible. Activated charcoal water filters are available for whole-home systems, as well as countertop models. Drink eight-10 glasses of pure water per day to help soothe the digestive tract, fight fatigue, keep organs operating, and provide lubrication for joints and tissues.

6. Emergency Toxin Removal

As mentioned above, one of the most common activated charcoal uses is to remove toxin and chemicals in the event of ingestion. Most organic compounds, pesticides, mercury, fertilizer and bleach bind to activated charcoal’s surface, allowing for quicker elimination, while preventing the absorption in the body.

Activated charcoal is also used in the event of an accidental, or purposeful, overdose of many pharmaceutical drugs and over-the-counter medications. It’s effective for aspirin, opium, cocaine, morphine and acetaminophen. It’s important that the proper amount is administered as quickly as possible — definitely within an hour of ingestion.

In the event of poisoning, call 911 immediately. Proper dosing is imperative. According to the University of Michigan Health System, 50 to 100 grams (not milligrams!) is used in cases of poisoning in adults and 10 to 25 grams for children.(8)

In addition, activated charcoal can be used in cases of food poisoning when nausea and diarrhea are present. Adults take 25 grams at onset of symptoms or when food poisoning is suspected, and children should be given 10 grams. Increase dosage as necessary. Remember, it’s essential that adequate water is consumed when activated charcoal is taken.

7. Skin and Body Health

Activated charcoal uses extend beyond internal applications. For external treatments, it’s effective at treating body odor and acne and relieving discomfort from insect bites, rashes from poison ivy or poison oak, and snake bites.

After a mosquito bite or bee sting, mix one capsule of activated charcoal with ½ tablespoon of coconut oil, and dab on affected area. Reapply every 30 minutes until itching and discomfort are gone. As activated charcoal stains nearly everything it touches, wrap with a bandage.

To treat bites from snakes and spiders, including the Brown Recluse or Black Widow, you want to cover a larger area than just a small bandage, as the bacteria and viruses that lead to tissue damage need to be mitigated quickly.

Create a wrap out of fabric that’s big enough to go around the affected area twice. Dab the mixture of coconut oil and activated charcoal on the fabric, and wrap. Secure with bandages. Reapply every two to three hours, rinsing well between applications.

To treat acne, mix one capsule of activated charcoal with two teaspoons of aloe vera gel, and smooth over face. Let dry and rinse off completely. The activated charcoal binds with environmental toxins and dirt that contribute to acne. It’s also good for spot treatments.

8. Digestive Cleanse

Activated charcoal uses help promote a healthy digestive tract by removing toxins that cause allergic reactions, oxidative damage and poor immune system function. By removing the toxins from your system, you can reduce joint pain, increase energy and increase mental function.

Environmental factors, including pesticides on food, chemicals in the water we drink and exposure to mold, create a toxic burden in our bodies. It’s important to routinely cleanse the digestive tract to support overall health and wellness. To complete a digestive cleanse with activated charcoal, take 10 grams 90 minutes prior to each meal, for two days.

During the cleanse, eat only organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meat, and wild fish. If during the cleanse you find you are constipated, this is a sure sign you’re not consuming enough water! Drink a glass of warm water with a slice of lemon and a touch of honey every half hour until constipation is relieved.

9. Anti-Aging

Activated charcoal uses include helping prevent cellular damage to kidneys and liver, as well as supporting healthy adrenal glands. It’s imperative to cleanse toxins and chemicals routinely from the body. Activated charcoal benefits major organs by helping the body flush out the toxins and chemicals that cause the damage.

Aging is a natural part of life, but due to the toxic load we are exposed to through food, our homes and workplaces, and our environment, to prevent pre-mature aging we must get rid of them.

For this activated charcoal use, take two capsules per day after exposure to nonorganic foods, heavy meals or after contact to other toxins. This supports better cognitive function, a reduction in brain fog, healthier kidney and liver function, and a healthier digestive tract.

10. Reduces High Cholesterol

Studies around the world show that activated charcoal reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol as much as some prescription medications. In one study, total cholesterol decreased by 25 percent, LDL cholesterol decreased by 41 percent, while HDL increased by 8 percent — in just four weeks.(9)

Study participants took three doses of eight grams each for the period of the study. As mentioned below, don’t take activated charcoal within 90 minutes to two hours of taking any prescription medication or supplements as it can prevent proper absorption.

How to detox and start a Sugar Free Limited Wheat diet and my struggles

Let me first start by saying this diet was not easy at first. It took a lot of searching the web for information and following the advice of a naturopath doctor.

In this post I will show how I got started down this wonderful healthy lifestyle.

First off I want to talk about Candida. I never really knew what Candida was, I thought it was all about yeast infections and a disease people get that is hard to get rid of. Well I was kinda right but that is not the whole story. Candida is a build up of yeast in your body. Men, women and children can have Candida. I didn’t think I had Candida because I didn’t get many yeast infections…. Wrong it doesn’t just show up in your “unmentionables”, you can have it on your tongue, throat and skin as well and not know it.

The ABC’S’S of the major contributing factors of Candida overgrowth are (A) Antibiotics, (B) Birth control pills, (C) Cortisone (steroids), (S) Sugar (S) Stress.

There are many symptoms of Candida.

  • You are developing new allergies as you get older.
  • You are always tired
  • Poor digestion, Digestive Difficulties
  • Gas and Bloating
  • Frequent Colds and/or Flu’s
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Genital Itching
  • Bad Breath
  • Skin Rashes

You may have Candidiasis.  Or you could be suffering from many other imbalances.  Most likely you have a combination of problems, so treating Candida you will make your body that much stronger to deal with the other conditions.  If you have no trace of a Candida problem (unlikely) you will still benefit from a thorough intestinal clean-up as that afforded by Psyllium cleanser and Diatomaceous Earth detoxification; and your overall condition will improve regardless of what you are suffering from.

My biggest one’s were:
1. Adrenal Fatigue, and just feeling run down all the time. Not able to get enough sleep. No energy to do anything but sit on the couch and watch TV.
2. Digestive Difficulties/Chronic Constipation – only going No. 2 once every other day, sometimes longer and I thought that was normal.
3. Gas and Bloating… all the time so uncomfortable.
4. Frequent Colds and Flu’s… OMG I got sick every time something went around, approx. 4-5 colds per year and even though I use to get the flu shots (never again) I would get every flu going around. Throat infections were the worst.

I can honestly say the above symptoms have decreased by 99%. I very seldom get ill with colds and flu’s anymore (spring allergies get me still, but I’m working on that).

My digestive track is working as it should be and I faithfully go No. 2 every day now.  Optimally, it is healthiest to have 2-3 bowel movements daily.  Failure to eliminate waste from the body on a daily basis causes a host of problems.  It slows down the rate at which wastes move through the colon, leading to toxins being absorbed into the body.  This “auto-intoxication” can, over a period of time, cause auto-immune disorders as well as problems such as obesity, gas, bloating, diverticulitis, headaches, depression, even colon cancer.
I have no more gas and bloating unless I cheat and then it happens immediately and I don’t like it and usually regret what I ate. lol but its all good to remind yourself once in a while what certain foods do to your body.

My energy level is up and I don’t feel run down anymore. I’m refreshed when I wake in the morning at 5am lol and I can get thru the day without feeling tired or needing a nap. I have a desk that I can either sit at or stand at and I went from sitting all day to standing at my desk all day. My co-workers find it odd to see me sitting at my desk now as I’ve been standing now for a few weeks.

Detox Stage

Now lets talk the detox stage. There are three products you will need to pick up to start this detox.

1. Caproyl or Caproil- This can be found in a natural health food store like Planet Organic or Community Natural Whole foods or if your not close to a health food store you can order from this link:  http://www.communitynaturalfoods.com/ or amazon.ca  Caproyl is a mixture of safflower oil and coconut oil. It eliminates yeast on contact and its effectiveness is increased if used with Psyllium which acts as a carrier to cover all the affected area. Liquid format ensures complete coverage of the colon and maximum effectiveness against yeast. Only liquid Caproyl will work with this program.

2. Psyllium – Can be found in the drug store, whole food stores etc. I found a mix of Psyllium/Ground Flax Seed/Dandelion Rood Powder/Burdock Root Powder and Fenugreek Seed Powder that works great. I bought mine at Planet Organic and its called “Omega 3 Nutracleanse” or you can order it thru this link: http://www.nutracleanse.biz  It is a gluten-free, 100% natural food product based on a 150 year-old Finnish recipe.  It is a unique formulation consisting of ground flaxseed, psyllium husks, dandelion root powder, burdock root powder, and fenugreek seed powder.  All ingredients are sourced from organic suppliers and no fillers are used.

3. Diatomaceous Earth (Food Grade) – Can be found in a Natural Store or ordered online at amazon: http://www.amazon.ca/Food-Grade-Diatomaceous-Earth-Grams/dp/B00GJ2DC2G/ref=pd_cp_121_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0H6HPNCY4VE5RHHHMDXF This one was confusing to me as I thought this was only for getting rid of bugs in the garden and lawn.  I was quite surprised when my doctor told me to take it.  I use it in my homemade deodorants and toothpaste but never thought of ingesting it.  DE helps move things out of your intestines and helps promote healthier hair, skin, bones, and joints.  It helps create more regular bowel movements and detox your digestive system.  Increased collagen production supports healthy digestion allowing your body to absorb more nutrients and flush out more unnecessary waste.  Great information about DE here: https://www.diatomaceousearth.com/diatomaceous-earth-human/

How to take these three products.

Mix 2 tsp of Caproil, 1 well rounded tsp of Psyllium and 1 tbsp. of DE with 6 oz of water or 2 oz unsweetened juice (Preferably water as Candida thrives on fruit juices, but if you can’t do just water, candida doesn’t do well with Caprylic acid and if you hand them both on a platter they’ll hardly get to taste the juice before they get zapped).  Mix in a cup with a lid or a jar and shake vigorously for 10 – 15 seconds.  Drink immediately.  Take this 1/2 hours before breakfast (on an empty stomach).  Drink 6 – 8 glasses of water daily to keep the Psyllium moving through the intestinal tract easily.

Okay so above is how they suggest to take it but I do mine a bit different.  I also take Kefir which I buy at the grocery store in the yogurt isle (usually on the top shelf).  Kefir is a unique cultured dairy product that is one of the most probiotic rich foods on the planet and has incredible medicinal benefits like boosting your immune system, builds bone density, fights allergies, improve lactose digestion, kills candida and supports detoxification.  More info here on Kefir: http://draxe.com/kefir-benefits/

After waking I pour a half glass of Kefir and mix in my Caproil, DE and Psyllium.  It is very thick and gritty.  I chug it down and I’m good for the day.  The Psyllium I buy above taste like walnuts and the Kefir taste like yogurt.  You get use to it really fast.  This mixture will fill you up as the Psyllium expands, I usually take mine at 6:30am and not usually hungry until 9am.  The more water you drink with this the fuller you will feel. It’s also great to take before your meals to help fill you up so you don’t over eat.

In the beginning of this detox you will want to take this mixture twice a day.  One in the morning and one in the evening.  1 hour before supper or 2 hours after.  Tip: If you take the mixture when your feeling like snacking in the evening it will take away any cravings and fill you up.  Unfortunately, killing all the Candida can take many months to accomplish, but not a bad deal considering it took many years to get that way.  You should feel better in 3 – 8 weeks.  For many, it will not last unless you continue with the Psyllium and Diatomaceous Earth for another 10 months.  (Using Caproil every 4th week for 5 consecutive days to keep Candida in check).  The longer you do this, the better you will feel.

I’m on week 14 now taking a break from the Caproil for 4 weeks but carrying on with the Pysillium, DE and Kefir.  I also keep a bottle of Caproil for days I slip and eat sugary foods (not very often though).  Just sometimes you can’t avoid it.

The die off

When taking this mixture twice a day please be aware of the “die-off” reaction.  When a large number of Candida are killed off during the initial period of treatment, a great amount of toxic material is suddenly released.  This can produce certain uncomfortable effects such as flu symptoms (stuffiness, headache, general aches, diarrhea), skin rashes, vaginal irritation/discharge, or even something unusual such as numbness in the legs or mental confusion.  The exact symptoms are neither important nor do they lend themselves to explanation.  The die-off reaction normally lasts from one day to no longer than a week.  If symptoms are severe, it may be necessary to cut back the amount of Caproil from 2 tsp to 1/4 tsp or even less.  When symptoms subside, increase gradually over a few weeks to the recommended level of 2 tsp.

The Diet

Candida loves refined, over-processed, low-fiber foods, and especially sugars.  You should avoid candies, desserts, pastries, soft drinks, cookies, cakes, stuffing’s, sauces – anything refined and/or with high sugar content.

Read the labels on packaged products very carefully and eliminate those that include large amounts of sugar and especially high fructose corn syrup.

Candida is a yeast.  If you eat yeast-containing foods you will burden your immune system with more yeast, even though not specifically Candida; this will compromise your condition.

Drug abuse, alcohol and smoking lower your immunity.  So avoid them.

Avoid antibiotics and steroid drugs (birth control) since these promote overgrowth of Candida.

Dairy (milk, cheese, cream, etc.) wheat products and red meat should be consumed in moderation and occasionally only.  Otherwise, they will clog the intestinal track and provide an excellent breeding environment for Candida.  (Unsalted butter and plain yogurt are less of a problem than the other dairy products).

Taking a probiotic during the detox will help to replenish your intestinal tract with friendly bacteria as the Candida is killed off.

Avoid:

  • Sugar and sugar containing foods
  • Yeast breads, pastries etc.
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Malt products, commercial soups
  • Processed meats and smoked meats
  • Dried fruits (raisins, prune, dates, etc.)
  • Fruit juices, fresh or frozen
  • Melons and grapes
  • Antibiotics
  • Milk (contains lactose)
  • Anything with ‘OSE in it

Bread Alternatives:

Corn tortillas, Burritos, Wasa “lite” rye, Rice cakes or crackers, Mana bread (freezer)

Milk Alternatives:

Soya milk and goat milk.  Use soya milk in moderation if it contains malt.  Small amounts of cheese (2-3 x week), butter and yogurt in moderation.
P
Moderate Candida Control Diet:

You can eat freely: meats (except those listed above), eggs, poultry, fish, low carbohydrate vegetables, raw nuts and seeds (except peanuts and cashews), and oils (flax and olive).

You can eat cautiously: Fruits (2 per day), cereals and other whole grain products (yeast free, sugar free), 2 servings per day of high carbohydrates i.e. if you have sweet potatoes for lunch then have only a small serving of grain or pasta for dinner.

The above is just a guide for the initial detox.  After detox you will feel way better and continue to eat healthier choices because of the way it makes you feel.

I found that my biggest struggle was giving up my red wine.  I very much enjoy a glass of red wine after a hard day of work or on the weekends.  For the first 3 weeks I avoided it and followed this diet the best I could.  Then at the end of Aug. my son got married.  What was I going to do???  I was worried about food and I wanted to have some wine.  Well the food wasn’t a problem as there was chicken and salads which was delicious.  As for the wine, I think I drank a full bottle + to myself.

Did this affect me the next day?  Yup I was hung over lol.  Did it affect my diet, honestly I didn’t notice, maybe because I was hung over.  I picked up my diet (I hate calling it a diet)  and carried on.  There are times you just can’t avoid the above mentioned foods/drinks or you don’t want too.  You need to treat yourself once in awhile or its not going to work.  It’s like the old saying “you always want what you can’t have”.  But you have to have the will power to jump right back on the diet after the treat.  I also up my dose of Caproil a bit for the next couple of days.

Here’s a little story on what happened to me after being on the diet for 5 weeks.  We went camping this summer and in the camper left from last trip (before diet) were a bunch of red jelly beans and candies plus two milk chocolate bars.  Sitting around the fire one evening I decided to have a bite of chocolate.  I was never a huge chocolate lover but once in awhile I very much enjoyed a chocolate bar.  Was it heaven??  No not really, because I hadn’t had any in 5 weeks (I must have lost the taste for it) I thought it was bitter and a kind of foreign.  How did I feel?  Well within 10 mins I was bouncing off the tree’s (being that we were camping) and had the biggest sugar rush ever.  I was up until 2am cleaning and organizing our camper.  I totally understand what kids go through now.  How did I feel the next day??  Let me just say I won’t do it again (famous words of someone with a bad alcohol hangover).  I felt awful, my tummy was bloated, I was sluggish and very tired.  I felt like I had an alcohol hangover.  I haven’t eaten milk chocolate or candy since, but I did find a natural sugar chocolate that gives me a chocolate fix.

While on this health fix you should be taking a probiotic. Either by supplement, yogurt, Keifer, Sauerkraut and pickles.

Below are some foods you should avoid while detoxing, I didn’t avoid all of them as I ate pork (love bacon) and seafood (sushi, shrimp, salmon)

SUGARS:
Sugar
Honey
Syrup
Chocolate
Molasses
Rice Syrup
Artificial Sweeteners

Condiments tend to be high in sugar and can exacerbate your Candida. Stay away from the soft drinks too. Always read food labels to make sure your food doesn’t contain sugar. Be careful – the aspartame in diet cola weakens your immune system can leave you vulnerable to Candida.

ALCOHOL:
Wine
Beer
Spirits
Liquors
Cider

Drinking large amounts of alcohol can actually lead to a temporary drop in your blood sugar, but moderate amounts tend to increase it. Alcoholic drinks are often full of carbohydrates and associated with high sugar mixers and foods. In the long run, alcohol consumption tends to decrease the effectiveness of insulin, leading to consistently higher blood sugar levels. Alcohol can also increase gut permeability and negatively affect your immune system.

GRAINS & GLUTINOUS FOODS:
Anything made with wheat, rye, oats or barley, e.g. white bread, rye bread, pasta.
Spelt products
Corn and corn byproducts
Rice

Many Candida sufferers have a high sensitivity to Gluten. Give your immune system a break and stay off gluten during your Candida diet. Corn-by products like popcorn tend to be contaminated with mold.

FRUIT:
Fresh Fruit
Dried Fruit
Canned Fruit
Fruit Juice

The high sugar content in fruit feeds Candida, even though they are natural sugars. Fruits like melon may also contain mold. A squeeze of lemon is OK.

VEGETABLES:
Potatoes
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Yams
Beets
Peas
Parsnips

This group of vegetables is very nutrient-dense, however they should be avoided until your Candida overgrowth is fully under control.
They then can be reintroduced in small portions one at a time.

MEATS:
All pork products
Cured meats
Processed meats
Smoked or vacuum-packed meats

Pork contains retroviruses that survive cooking and may be harmful for those with a weakened digestive system. Processed meats like lunch meat and spam are loaded with dextrose nitrates, sulfates and sugars.

FISH:
All fish except for wild salmon and sardines
All shellfish

All shellfish and most fish contain alarming levels of heavy metals and toxins. These will suppress your immune system and leave you vulnerable to Candida. Studies have shown that farmed salmon contain high levels of PCBs, mercury and other carcinogenic agents.

DAIRY PRODUCTS:
Cheese
Milk
Cream
Whey products

Almost all dairy should be avoided except ghee, butter, kefir and probiotic yogurt. Milk contains lactose so it should be avoided. Kefir and yogurt are better because most of the lactose disappears during the fermentation process.

ADDITIVES & PRESERVATIVES:
Citric Acid
Anything you don’t know or can’t pronounce!
The manufactured, additive form of citric acid is derived from yeast. However the natural form, as found in lemons and limes, is OK on the diet.

Additives and preservatives can disrupt your friendly bacteria and allow the Candida yeast to flourish.

OTHER BEVERAGES:
Coffee
Black & green tea
Diet & regular soda
Energy drinks
Fruit Juices

Caffeine can cause your blood sugar to rise, but the main problem is that it weakens the adrenals and can impair your immune system. Coffee also contains mold. Even decaf tea and coffee are to be avoided, as they contain residual levels of caffeine.

NUTS:
Cashews
Peanuts
Pistachios

This group of nuts contains a high amount of mold, which can inflame your Candida problem.

BEANS:
Beans and other legumes
Chickpeas
Tofu
Soy cheese
Soy milk
All soy products

The combination of being hard to digest and high in carbs rules out beans from the first stages of the diet. They can be reintroduced later on in small portions. Soy products are mostly forbidden, as the majority of soy is genetically modified. If you can find non-GMO tofu, it should be OK to eat.

MUSHROOMS / MOLDS:
Mushrooms
Truffles

Mushrooms don’t “feed” Candida as some websites claim, but eating some fungi can cause an inflammatory reaction if you are already suffering from Candida. On the other hand, some medicinal mushrooms are actually OK on the diet and have strong immune-boosting properties. Good examples are Reishi and Maitake.

CONDIMENTS:
Ketchup
Mayonnaise
Regular Mustard
Relish
Horseradish
Soy sauce

Ketchup, tomato paste, and spaghetti sauces all contain high amounts of hidden sugars. Condiments generally do tend to be high in sugar, and they can exacerbate your Candida. For an alternative salad dressing, try coconut aminos or a simple olive oil and lemon juice dressing.

VINEGAR:
All vinegars, except for Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar is made in a yeast culture, depletes the stomach of acids and can also cause inflammation in your gut. However, one particular vinegar (unfiltered apple cider vinegar) can actually be helpful in combating a Candida overgrowth.

FATS AND OILS:
Peanut oil
Corn oil
Canola oil

Soy oil Peanut, corn and canola oil are contaminated with mold. And most soy beans used in soy oil are GMO.

There is a ton of information and recipes on the Internet. I find a lot of sugar free recipes on Pintrest. And we eat a lot more whole, organic foods now.

I thought New Years was going to be a tough one on my healthy eating as we go to a NYE Party every year and the food at the buffet is amazing and we usually have snacks like chips and candy in our hotel room. Well it wasn’t as hard as I thought. The buffet had lots of salads, baked salmon, wild rice and seafood. I avoided the fluffy white buns (gggrrrr). They had every kind of dessert you could imagine but I was satisfied when I finished my meal and didn’t go back. In our hotel room I brought a cooler with Turkey pepperoni, dry salami, marble cheese sliced up, and flax crackers. They were awesome at midnight when we got hungry.
New Year’s Day was a bit different, now I had a pretty good hangover from the multiple glasses of red wine. I needed food and had bacon, scrambled eggs, pasta dish, sausage, hash browns, fruit, lots of water and yikes (bites my lip) waffle with strawberries and whip cream…. Ya I did that. It tasted amazing. Di I finish it? Nope the waffles were stale… Lol So I will be taking my Capryl again… Was definitely worth it. It doesn’t happen very often and it’s nice to have a treat now and again.
